Northcote

Set in the heart of Northcote — a suburb that thrives on character, creativity, and contrast — this renovation is a reflection of its surroundings. Rather than opting for a single colour story, our client embraced the art of contrast: layering tone, texture, and bold design moments to create a home that feels expressive yet cohesive. In the kitchen, a medley of finishes is masterfully balanced. Gossamer White laminate sets a soft, neutral base, while Prime Oak Woodmatt introduces warmth and organic grain. These materials aren’t simply decorative; they were chosen for the way they play off each other, providing both contrast and continuity. At the centre of it all, the custom-designed island bench floats elegantly off the ground, supported by slim black legs. Topped with statement stone, it breaks away from the typical island block — instead offering a furniture-like piece that adds a sense of openness and design personality. The leg detail also reflects a subtle nod to mid-century styling, a look that suits Northcote’s modern yet retro-leaning aesthetic. In the bathroom, we echoed the Prime Oak Woodmatt to maintain connection between the spaces, pairing it with handleless cabinetry for a minimalist finish. While the materials tie the zones together, the execution in each room is unique — reflecting the layered nature of this home’s design.  From the bold choices in colour to the curated mix of textures, this Northcote project celebrates design that dares to be different — and succeeds by staying true to its place.
